Wave-based frequency-domain methods
Abstract
Many numerical methods for sound propagation are based on solution of the full wave equation, or related equations, after application of a Fourier transform to the time coordinate. We call such methods frequency-domain methods. The primary advantage of this approach is that the explicit dimensionality of the problem is reduced: the time-domain problem is replaced by independent solutions calculated at each frequency of interest. When a time-domain or broadband solution is desired, however, the computational benefits of frequency-domain methods are diminished.
