Hybrid Welding Technologies for Marine Applications
Abstract
This chapter highlights the emerging domain of hybrid welding techniques, which combine the advantages of multiple processes to achieve superior weld quality and efficiency. It introduces the concept and industrial importance of hybrid laser-arc welding (HLAW), a process increasingly used for ship panels and offshore structures due to its deep penetration, high travel speed, and reduced distortion. The chapter also explores underwater welding, distinguishing between wet and dry (habitat) methods and their respective benefits, limitations, and safety considerations. Metallurgical aspects of hybrid and underwater welding are analyzed, focusing on heat-affected zone characteristics, microstructural refinement, and corrosion protection. Case studies highlight successful applications in offshore repair and ship maintenance. Furthermore, the chapter reviews quality assurance and inspection standards relevant to hybrid and underwater welds, emphasizing the importance of real-time monitoring and testing. Concluding with a discussion on future trends such as fiber laser integration, advanced sensors, and digital process control—this chapter reinforces hybrid welding as a key enabler of efficient, high-performance marine fabrication.
