Welding for Offshore and Subsea Structures
Abstract
This chapter provides an in-depth study of welding practices applied to offshore and subsea structures, where environmental and operational demands are particularly severe. It begins with an overview of various offshore installations, fixed platforms, floating structures, and subsea production systems emphasizing their dependence on reliable welded joints. The chapter explores the unique challenges of underwater and hyperbaric welding, addressing issues such as pressure effects, limited accessibility, and metallurgical changes under high-pressure environments. Key topics include material selection, filler metal compatibility, corrosion control, and heat-affected zone (HAZ) management in offshore welding. The text also elaborates on quality control procedures, non-destructive testing (NDT), and compliance with international standards (API, DNV, ABS, etc.). Emerging trends such as robotic deep-sea welding, artificial intelligence (AI)-based process control, and digital inspection systems are discussed in the context of modern offshore engineering. By merging theory with industrial practice, this chapter equips readers with a comprehensive understanding of how welding supports structural integrity, safety, and longevity in offshore and subsea environments.
