Abstract

There is arguably still a certain mystique and sense of community in being part of a traditional profession with restricted entry, legal privileges and professional obligations, underwritten by a formal code of conduct. This is certainly true for the veterinary professions. This is a relatively small sector (there are about ten registered doctors for every veterinarian in the UK), and yet we are very visible in society, intermittently subject to much public scrutiny and criticism (as with the summer 2025 debate over veterinary costs), and we generally share a strong sense of group identity.
