Abstract

This contribution discusses the personal experiences of a veterinarian that have led to charitable provision of a range of animal companionship support services through veterinary community outreach. This programme addresses the need for a multidisciplinary approach to providing accessible place-based care and support where there is an owner experiencing vulnerability. Such support can be provided working collaboratively with other service providers in the local community and by having a variety of well-supported volunteer roles. A thorough initial holistic assessment means that both owner and animal needs can be identified. Working closely with human health and social care means that the profession can access relationships that need veterinary support and help to create care plans and support networks for those at risk.
