Queering the Veterinary Humanities
Abstract
How can queer perspectives expand the veterinary humanities? And what does it mean to ‘queer’ the field? This chapter introduces some of the conceptual and methodological tools of queer theory to make the case for an inclusive veterinary practice – one that recognizes and actively supports the experiences of LGBTQI+ people in and with the profession. Engaging with current debates about contextualised care, I argue that the veterinary humanities benefit from attention to queer diversity and inclusion and related socio-cultural norms that privilege some – human and animal – lives over others for they shape the practitioner–client–animal triad not just in theory but also in practice.
