Abstract

Plants form an essential part of the ecosystem as many of other organisms depend on them for survival, thereby constituting stress for them. Plants have been able to thrive under stressful environments over time due to the important role played by enzymes such as cytochrome P450 (CYP450) monooxygenases. This chapter examines the definition and significance of CYP450 genes in plants, traces early discoveries and key contributors in CYP450 research, and outlines the evolutionary history of these genes. We summarize major milestones achieved in understanding plant CYP450 genes and detail the molecular biology and bioinformatics techniques, tools, and databases used in their analysis. Additionally, we review the classification and phylogenetic relationships of plant P450 genes, discuss gene duplication events and their adaptive significance, and explain functional diversification and environmental interactions. The chapter concludes with perspectives of future research directions regarding the evolutionary history of plant CYP450s.
