Abstract

Cytochrome P450s (CYP450) are a class of monooxygenase enzymes that play a role in primary, secondary, and xenobiotic metabolisms. They have extensive utility in biotechnology, the application of technology that harnesses biological systems, living organisms, or their components to produce or develop various goods. This chapter aims to elucidate the biotechnological importance of CYP450s in enhancing agricultural productivity and food security. This is done by considering the biotechnological relevance of CYP450s in crop and animal production, food processing and preservation industries, pharmaceutical industries and medicine, and environmental bioremediation. The multifunctional properties of P450s in a wide range of environmental conditions have made them of valuable relevance in myriad fields of science. The ability of CYP450s to modulate various metabolic pathways, hormones, drug metabolism, and xenobiotic detoxification makes them an important biotechnological tool for boosting agricultural production and enhancing food security.
