Abstract

Cytochrome P450 (CYP) monooxygenase is a superfamily of monooxygenases that consist of a large and diverse group of enzymes that perform the central role of detoxification of xenobiotics in plants. In addition to this function, CYPs are also involved in the biosynthesis and regulation of fatty acids, hormones, and defense compounds like alkaloids, terpenoids, and flavonoids, among others. Flooding stress is a significant abiotic stress that can have a detrimental impact on plant growth and development. Recent research has demonstrated that CYP monooxygenases also play crucial roles in a plant’s ability to tolerate flooding stress. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the role of CYP monooxygenases in plant flooding stress tolerance, under which we will be looking at the biochemical and physiological functions of CYP monooxygenases in plants, their regulation, and potential mechanisms for enhancing plant tolerance to flooding stress. By understanding the role of CYP monooxygenases in plant flooding stress tolerance, new strategies can be developed to improve crop yields and enhance plant resilience in the face of environmental challenges.
