Role of Cytochrome P450 Monooxygenases in Heavy Metal Stress Tolerance
Abstract
Cytochrome P450 (CYP) monooxygenases play a crucial role in the plant’s defense against heavy metal stress, and this chapter focuses on discussing the major roles of CYP monooxygenases in heavy metal stress tolerance. These enzymes are involved in multiple aspects of heavy metal detoxification and metabolism in plants. They contribute to the conversion of toxic heavy metal ions into less harmful forms or their sequestration within the vacuole, thereby minimizing their detrimental effects on plant cells. CYP monooxygenases also participate in the synthesis and regulation of metal chelators, such as phytochelatins, which play a vital role in heavy metal detoxification by binding and sequestering heavy metal ions. Furthermore, these enzymes are involved in the regulation of heavy metal-responsive genes and the phytoremediation of heavy metal-contaminated soils. Understanding the mechanisms by which CYP monooxygenases function in heavy metal stress tolerance is essential for developing strategies to enhance plant resilience to heavy metal contamination. Subsequently, by unraveling the intricate mechanisms of CYP monooxygenases in heavy metal stress tolerance, researchers can gain valuable insights into potential approaches for improving plant adaptation and survival in heavy metal-contaminated environments. Ultimately, this knowledge can aid in the development of innovative strategies to mitigate the negative impacts of heavy metal pollution on agriculture, ecosystem health, and human well-being.
