Abstract

Weeds have been considered as one of the major biotic factors mitigating the profitable production of field crops worldwide. The advent and significant role of herbicides have revolutionized the agricultural sector across the globe. Cytochrome P450 monooxygenase has been identified as an important enzyme regulating the selectivity of herbicides in some crops while killing other weeds sharing a common family with those crops. This chapter elucidates the beneficial roles of Cytochrome P450s (CYPs) in crop production as herbicide-tolerant effectors in plants, profiles the CYP families and clans engaged in herbicide stress regulation in crops, explains the mechanisms of herbicide stress tolerance in crops as mediated by CYPs, and describes their role as herbicide stress regulators in cereals, legumes, root/tubers, and vegetables.
