Abstract

Several species, including plants, constitute a group of enzymes known as CYP450. In addition to producing secondary metabolites that are a part of the plant’s defenses against nematodes and other pests and pathogens, these enzymes are crucial for numerous metabolic activities. The function and potential of CYP450 in plants’ defensive mechanisms against significant pests like nematodes will be covered in this chapter. Understanding the role and potential of CYP450 in plant defense, we can gain insights into the mechanisms of plant–nematode interactions, which can aid in strategizing effective pest management strategies. The diversity of CYP450 will be discussed, as well as strategies for improving plant defense by priming plants with CYP450 either through genetic engineering or through plant breeding to combat nematode threats. CYP450-based strategies could be used to develop plant breeding programs tailored to specific nematode management needs. Overall, knowledge gaps in our understanding of the role of P450s in plant–nematode interactions and research prospects in this area highlighted to develop new approaches for crop protection against nematodes are future studies that are needed to be explored.
