Abstract

The biosynthesis of various natural products and the metabolism of xenobiotic compounds in plants heavily rely on the significant involvement of Cytochrome P450 (CYP450) enzymes. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in understanding the role of CYP450 enzymes in plant biology, particularly in the context of genetic engineering. This chapter explores the diverse functions and mechanisms of CYP450 enzymes in plants, emphasizing their potential applications in genetic engineering and biotechnology. It provides an overview of the structural and functional characteristics of these enzymes, their involvement in key metabolic pathways, and their influence on plant growth, development, and stress responses. The chapter also highlights the recent advancements in manipulating CYP450 genes to enhance the production of valuable secondary metabolites, improve plant tolerance to abiotic and biotic stresses, and engineer plants with novel traits. This chapter endeavors to elucidate the intricate functions of CYP450 enzymes within the realm of plant biology, with the overarching goal of advancing our comprehensive comprehension of plant genetics and facilitating the exploration of novel avenues in genetic engineering and enhancements in crop cultivation.
