Future Developments of Cold-Resistant Crops and the Role of Cytochrome P450 Monooxygenase
Abstract
The cytochrome P450 monooxygenases (CYPs) group is a superfamily of enzymes operating in numerous metabolic processes including the detoxification of xenobiotics, biosynthesis of secondary metabolites, and hormone regulation. This book chapter primarily focuses on a role of CYPs in cold stress resistance, an important factor of the environment shaping the plant growth and reproduction. CYP enzymes are recognized to play a role in the production of secondary metabolites in plants, including terpenoids, flavonoids, and phenylpropanoids, which play the vital roles in plant defense under the conditions of abiotic stress such as cold stress. The CYPs have been found to be responsible for the regulation of phytohormone levels, Abscisic acid (ABA) and Jasmonic acid (JA), which are known to trigger plant responses to cold stress. Analogously, the CYP83A1 gene in Arabidopsis has been observed to be up-regulated during prolonged coldness stress which means its crucial in flavonoid metabolism. The practical consequences of discovering CYPs function in cold stress resilience may be relevant to biotechnologically and agricultural applications. The possibility of translating CYP genes expression by either genetic manipulation or breeding traits lies within the realm of future developments of cold-resistant crops. Through all directed improvement of biosynthesis of cold stress-related protective compounds and modulating of phytohormone level, it may be possible to improve the cold resistance of crops, so the loss of crop yields by cold stress will be reduced. Further advancements will include genetic studies of an entire genome, uncovering the functionalities of CYPs, and determining the regulatory mechanisms that control the expression of CYP genes in response to cold stress. Developing a P450-based biotechnological devices, for instance, synthetic biology protocols and CRISPR/Cas9-based gene modulation will be fundamental in elucidating the nature of CYP functions and improving cold tolerance in the plants.
