Abstract

Plant cell walls surround cells and provide both external protection and a means of cell-to-cell communication. Cell walls constitute mainly polymers like polysaccharides, cellulose, hemicelluloses, suberin, cutin, pectin, lignin, xylan, and phenolic compounds. This chapter overviews plant cell wall architecture and functions and their significance, the role of cytochrome P450 (CYP450) monooxygenase in the biosynthesis and functional regulation of plant cell wall components including cellulose, and hemicelluloses, suberin, cutin, pectin, lignin, glycoproteins, xylan, and phenolic compounds, their methylation and acetylation reactions, influence on cell wall porosity and flexibility. The chapter elucidates the application and implications of the roles played by CYP450 genes in plant cell wall biosynthesis and function.
