Abstract

Cytochrome P450s (CYPs) are special multifunctional enzymes with the potential to demonstrate catalytic versatility in various metabolic activities, including metabolite production, primary metabolism, and secondary metabolism. Secondary metabolites (SMs), while not mandatory for a plant’s survival, play crucial roles in the plant’s interaction with its surroundings. They frequently participate in safeguarding the plant against various biotic or abiotic stresses. Derived from diverse metabolic families, these compounds can be significantly triggered under stress conditions. Numerous SMs, crucial in medical, agricultural, and industrial contexts, undergo biosynthesis via CYP-catalysed reactions. This chapter examines the diverse roles of CYPs in plant secondary metabolite biosynthesis and discusses the functions of specific SMs within plants. This chapter also highlights studies on CYPs with respect to SMs biosynthesis, having the potential of boosting agricultural productivity.
