Abstract

In the dynamic realm of cybersecurity, teams situated within security operations centers (SOCs) consistently face evolving challenges while combating threats in high-stress environments. Due to the extreme operational context of these teams, this chapter addresses the need for a robust SOC teamwork framework, drawing from foundational team science principles, processes, and emergent states. Critical elements for effective team development in the SOC environment such as shared mental models, psychological safety, shared vision, cooperation and coordination, situation awareness, and mutual trust are identified. Additionally, cognitive factors such as bias and workload demands and their impact on decision-making and teamwork outcomes are examined, and insights are leveraged from Recognition Primed Decision-Making. This chapter recognizes SOC teams’ extreme environmental conditions and utilizes knowledge from team science, extreme environments, and decision-making literature to provide guidance for enhancing SOC team structures in these dynamic workplaces. This interdisciplinary perspective aims to provide SOC teams with the appropriate information to promote team adaptability, learning, resilience, well-being, and overall team effectiveness.
