Algorithms in Everyday Life and Computer Science
Abstract
Algorithms are the logical blueprints for solving problems, whether it is navigating to a destination or training a machine learning model. Routine human activities, including physical tasks such as cooking and getting ready for work, as well as nonphysical ones like thinking, are fundamentally algorithmic. As algorithms are essential for everyday tasks, the importance of algorithms in our everyday activities is discussed. Human actions inspire some algorithms; however, they are ultimately based on logical rules and mathematical operations. Algorithms are the bedrock of computer science and complex computational processes. They provide the step-by-step instructions that computers use to solve problems and perform tasks, forming the basis for all software and computing methods. The role of algorithms as the foundation of computer science is explained. Common examples of algorithms in computer science are cited. The fundamental roles of algorithms in computer science are highlighted. Desirable features and properties of an algorithm are mentioned, and the critical steps in algorithm formulation are elaborated.
