Abstract

The terms “attribute,” “feature”, and “feature selection algorithm” are defined. Feature selection is compared to clustering. It is contrasted with dimensionality reduction. Feature selection is a crucial step in data preprocessing, especially when dealing with high-dimensional data. It is necessary to improve model performance, reduce overfitting, and enhance interpretability. Feature selection methods are categorized into three main types: filter, wrapper, and embedded methods. Among feature selection methods using filters, chi-square, Pearson correlation, and analysis of variance algorithms are outlined. Step-by-step procedure of a wrapper-style algorithm: Recursive feature elimination (RFE) is described, touching upon the backward selection procedure, ranking of features, iterations, and ascertaining the optimal number of features. RF E is treated as a hybridized wrapper-filter embodiment. The advantages of RF E and the difficulties faced with interrelated features are discussed. Among feature selection with embedded methods, decision tree-based feature selection algorithms are prominent. Metrics used for decision tree feature selection, feature prioritization, and selection, as well as the working of the decision tree feature selection algorithm, are examined, followed by the random forest algorithm. Lasso and Ridge regression are considered. A comparison is made between filter, wrapper, and embedded methods for feature selection.
