Abstract

The rapidly advancing field of assistive robotics presents innovative solutions for the unique challenges faced by the elderly and autistic children, especially in healthcare and social sectors. This chapter explores the design and hardware of Expressive Universal Robot for Extensive Kinesthetic Assistance (EUREKA), a unique robotic platform designed specifically for these populations. The EUREKA robot, with an exterior resembling a baby elephant, aims to foster connections with autistic children. Its four-wheel drive system facilitates movement, while the trunk functions as a manipulator and gripper unit. The chapter offers a comprehensive overview of the design schematics and hardware components, including the actuation system, control architecture, communication modules, and sensory systems, all of which are tailored for optimal performance. Emphasis is also placed on the solar charging capabilities for energy efficiency. The design of EUREKA robot stands as a unique advancement in assistive robotics, promising to enhance the quality of life for vulnerable populations by offering personalized care and fostering independence.
