Design and Control of a Bionic Hand with Computer Vision Integration and High Grip Force for Intuitive Human–Machine Interaction
Abstract
In recent years, there has been a growing interest in developing bionic limbs that can mimic the functionality of natural human limbs. This chapter presents a design that closely resembles a human hand, capable of gripping and manipulation. Utilizing 3D printing and five servo motors with a stall torque of 13 kg/cm, the design controls finger motion through nylon strings. A Python-based computer vision code tracks human finger motions via a webcam, and the data are transmitted to the robotic hand controller, replicating human hand movements with high accuracy. The controller design uses a microcontroller board, and serial communication is implemented with the PySerial library. This approach allows intuitive control of the bionic hand, offering advantages like affordability, customization, and high dexterity over traditional prosthetic limbs. The integration of computer vision technology with open-source hardware provides an efficient and accurate method for controlling the robotic hand, making it an ideal choice for various applications but not limited to precise manufacturing, space exploration, construction, and medical procedures.
