Transplantation
Abstract
Previously referred to as ‘brainstem death’, the preferred term now is ‘diagnosis of death using neurological criteria’ (DNC), thereby moving away from an anatomically based definition of death. The recent international consensus definition of DNC is ‘the complete and permanent loss of brain function as defined by an unresponsive coma with loss of capacity for consciousness, brainstem reflexes and the ability to breathe independently’. The role of the anaesthetist in patients after DNC is essential in preserving organ function prior to harvesting, thus optimising the probability of subsequent successful organ transplantation.
