Abstract

The anaesthetic machine provides oxygenation, ventilation, and the continuous delivery of an accurate mixture of medical gases and anaesthetic vapours to the patient to induce and maintain anaesthesia. The modern continuous flow machine has evolved from a simple pneumatic device, credited to Boyle in 1917, to a sophisticated, electronically integrated, anaesthetic workstation. The latter incorporates an electronically controlled ventilator, output monitoring devices, and patient monitoring.
