Abstract

Anthropogenic climate change is a universally recognised phenomenon, predicted to have significant impacts on the health of the global population. These will be many and varied, including the health factors associated with mass migration due to rising sea levels, the direct impacts of extreme weather events, and the increasing prevalence of infectious diseases. Healthcare’s own effects on the environment are being increasingly measured and scrutinised. Anaesthesia has been identified as a significant contributor to climate change, largely due to direct effects of the two gases: nitrous oxide and desflurane.
