Abstract

Artificial insemination (AI) in animals is a reproductive technology used for conservation and improvement of livestock. AI has been used for many decades in cattle, sheep, horses, pigs, and goats. AI is mainly done to enhance the quality and quantity of dairy and meat products. The use of modern methods in AI has enabled this method to be very beneficial to produce healthier and more productive animals. The use of artificial vagina and electro-ejaculation made the collection of semen easy, and storage methods like cryopreservation enabled the animals’ breeders to use the semen after many years, even after the death of donor animals. Sexed semen is also used by breeders to produce specific type of young ones (females for dairy products and males for meat). Therefore, AI is an important and beneficial reproductive technology to fulfil the needs of growing population.
