Abstract

Integrated farming system (IFS) is a sustainable and holistic agricultural approach that combines crop production with allied activities such as livestock, aquaculture, agroforestry, and bioenergy. This chapter explores the historical development, core components, and wide-ranging benefits of IFS, with a particular focus on its implementation in India and Southeast Asia. IFS enhances resource use efficiency, diversifies income sources, strengthens food and nutritional security, and builds resilience to climate change. By integrating multiple farm enterprises, it helps reduce environmental degradation, mitigates the effects of land fragmentation, and lowers risks associated with market volatility. Successful IFS case studies from across the region illustrate how indigenous knowledge, policy interventions, and technological advancements contribute to improved farm productivity and ecological sustainability. These models underscore the importance of tailoring farming systems to local agro-climatic conditions and socioeconomic contexts. Despite its numerous advantages, the widespread adoption of IFS faces several challenges, including financial constraints, inadequate infrastructure, limited technical expertise, and institutional gaps. To overcome these barriers, the chapter recommends strategies such as capacity building through farmer training, policy reforms to incentivize integrated practices, strengthening rural infrastructure, and improving market access via cooperatives and digital platforms. In conclusion, promoting region-specific IFS models that integrate traditional wisdom with modern innovations and encourage active community participation is essential for achieving sustainable agriculture and rural development.
