Sustainable Supply Chain Finance: Aligning Finance with Sustainability Goals
Abstract
This chapter explores the potential of sustainable supply chain finance (SSCF), a framework that integrates financial mechanisms with sustainability principles to address the economic, environmental, and social challenges faced by modern supply chains. As global supply chains become increasingly complex and subject to growing regulatory and consumer demands, SSCF emerges as a critical tool for fostering resilience, accountability, and long-term competitiveness. By embedding sustainability into traditional supply chain finance (SCF) practices, SSCF enables supply chain participants to achieve financial efficiency while contributing to broader sustainable development goals. The chapter examines the roles of key stakeholders in driving SSCF adoption. Financial institutions play a pivotal role by designing innovative tools such as green loans, sustainability-linked bonds, and trade credit mechanisms, which incentivize sustainable practices and provide liquidity to supply chain participants. Corporations act as implementers, aligning financial and sustainability goals across their networks, while governments establish regulatory frameworks and incentives to support SSCF initiatives. Despite its potential, the chapter identifies significant barriers to SSCF adoption. These issues hinder SSCF’s accessibility and impact, particularly in developing markets. To address these challenges, the chapter proposes a strategic roadmap for embedding SSCF into global supply chains. It emphasizes the importance of leveraging digital technologies like Big Data Analytics (BDA) and blockchain to enhance transparency, efficiency, and decision-making.
