Beyond Profit: How Supply Chain Finance Drives CSR and Shared Value
Abstract
Supply chain finance (SCF) has emerged as a pivotal mechanism for driving operational efficiency and social impact, particularly as stakeholder expectations for corporate social responsibility and sustainability intensify. This chapter explores how SCF, traditionally viewed as a tool for optimizing cash flow, increasingly intersects with corporate social responsibility (CSR) frameworks and the concept of creating shared value. By channeling liquidity and reducing financial barriers across suppliers, SCF enables businesses to integrate ethical sourcing, fair trade, and environmental stewardship within their day-to-day operations. Specific financing instruments such as reverse factoring, carbon trade financing, and green supply chain finance facilitate investments in safer working conditions, reduced emissions, and community development programs, aligning financial strategies with social and environmental objectives. Central to this discussion is the shift from conventional CSR to CSV (creating shared value), where economic and societal goals reinforce each other. Through SCF solutions, companies can offer more favorable payment terms and capacity-building programs, effectively empowering small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and other marginalized players within the supply chain. The chapter underscores that such collaborations yield tangible results: enhanced product quality, stable market relationships, and reduced reputational risk. Moreover, by embedding social and environmental performance metrics into financing terms, SCF initiatives can spark a systemic transformation, bringing transparency and accountability to supply chain practices.
