Abstract

This chapter explores the convergence of machine learning (ML) applications in predictive maintenance for industrial systems, particularly as Electric Vehicles (EVs) become increasingly integrated into distribution networks. Along with the increased reliance on advanced machinery and equipment, and as EV adoption accelerates, the need for proactive maintenance and a resilient distribution infrastructure becomes vital. The chapter begins by discussing the limitations of traditional reactive maintenance practices, introducing predictive maintenance as a transformative approach to maintaining system health and preventing costly downtimes. In examining industrial systems and the challenges of EV integration into distribution networks, the chapter highlights the close interdependencies between the various technologies involved. A central focus is on ML methodologies, including supervised learning for fault detection, unsupervised learning for anomaly detection, and reinforcement learning for the optimization of maintenance schedules. These approaches are illustrated through real-world case studies, which show the adaptability of ML strategies to evolving industrial needs and dynamic distribution environments. The chapter further investigates how sensor data from both industrial machines and EVs, combined with other real-time data sources, enhances the predictive accuracy of ML models. The integration of this data allows for early issue detection and proactive interventions, ultimately supporting better asset health and optimized performance across distribution networks. This approach not only improves maintenance efficiency but also contributes to the operational stability of EV-charging infrastructures within the power grid. The chapter addresses challenges related to scalability, model interpretability, and ethical considerations in ML deployment, acknowledging the need for models that are both effective and understandable to stakeholders. Issues surrounding data privacy and security are also discussed; these are important given the networked nature of industrial systems and EV infrastructure. Future trends in predictive maintenance are explored, such as the inclusion of explainable AI techniques, ongoing model monitoring, and the potential impact of EVs on grid stability. This provides researchers and professionals with valuable insights into ML techniques and practical applications, as well as considerations for ethical deployment and future advancements in industrial transformation and electric mobility.
