Abstract

During the G20 presidency in India, 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were discussed as part of the 2030 Agenda by 192 UN member states. These goals include ending poverty, hunger, and gender inequality and promoting good health, affordable and clean energy, economic development, and so on. This chapter aims to review the complexity of the energy security issue, which is prevalent across the globe, and also discuss different approaches and measures adopted by various nations to enhance the usage of clean renewable energy sources (RESs). This chapter reviews the key trends of sustainable development in the field of energy production and distribution in Italy, including the pros, cons, and limitations of various approaches prevalent in Italy. It reviews the potential, working, and influence of the Renewable Energy Community (REC), proposed by the European Red-II Directive, in light of expanding the use of renewable energy resources. This chapter also focuses on different actions taken by EU member states other than Italy and even discusses the extent to which tenders for building up renewable energy resources have affected the expansion of RES. In the end, the chapter provides certain viable solutions that can be adopted by Italy in order to increase the energy security of the nation.
