Abstract

This chapter delves into Japan’s strategic shift towards sustainable energy security, highlighting eight key trends. Japan is transitioning from fossil fuels and nuclear energy to renewable sources like solar and wind power to address climate change, reduce carbon emissions, and lessen energy import dependence. Ambitious targets have been set for climate change mitigation and adaptation, including achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, supported by comprehensive policies and international collaborations. Electric vehicle (EV) adoption is being promoted to cut down on fossil fuel use and carbon emissions, supported by investments in charging infrastructure and financial incentives. Post-Fukushima, Japan is reevaluating its reliance on nuclear power, trying to balance a stable energy supply with safety and public acceptance. Energy efficiency and conservation, especially in industrial, transportation, and building sectors, are key to reducing energy demand and enhancing energy security, underpinned by policies and incentives for energy-efficient practices. The energy sector is undergoing deregulation and market reforms to foster competition, efficiency, and innovation, creating a more adaptable and diverse market. Energy storage and grid modernization are critical for integrating renewables into the energy system and ensuring reliability. Japan is also actively engaging in international cooperation and energy diplomacy to secure stable, diversified energy supplies and promote technology exports. Overall, Japan’s comprehensive approach towards sustainable energy security involves renewable energy expansion, climate change action, energy efficiency, market reforms, and international cooperation, aiming to create a sustainable, secure energy future and contribute to global climate change and energy security efforts.
