This chapter explores the significant role that energy plays in the global environment. The chapter primarily emphasises Russia’s key position in deposits of fossil fuels and how this dominance affects geopolitics, energy security, and ongoing climate change. It also highlights the challenges Russia is facing due to its huge dependency on fossil fuels and its underdeveloped infrastructure for renewable energy. The chapter finds that Russia holds a prominent geopolitical influence owing to its leading position in the production and export of oil, coal and natural gas. In light of climate change, the chapter emphasises the need for Russia to transition towards sustainable and low-carbon energy practices. It further explains that Russia has a huge potential for renewable energy resources and can diversify its energy portfolio by shifting from fossil fuel-based energy to clean energy resources. In summation, the chapter underlines the paramount importance of international cooperation in addressing the complex challenges at the intersection of energy and the environment. It positions Russia as a central figure in the global pursuit of a more sustainable and secure energy future, underscoring its potential to contribute significantly to a world marked by cleaner energy practices and enhanced collaboration on a global scale.
