Biofuel Significance in a Today's Transforming World
Abstract
The global energy landscape is constantly changing at a fast pace with concerns about energy security, global warming, climate change, and sustainability. Renewable energy sources, predominantly bioenergy, could be a promising alternative to conventional fossil fuels. This chapter explores the importance of biofuels for addressing environmental issues, highlighting their role in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and climate change. The biofuels will enhance energy independence and foster rural development through biomass utilization. The chapter covers the overview of biofuels for 1G, 2G, 3G, and 4G technologies; technological advancements; environmental benefits of biofuel production; policy and regulatory framework with context to the National Biofuel Policy of India; success stories and policy initiatives on international biofuels policies; and future outlooks. Biofuels, being an alternative source for conventional fuels, pose various challenges, such as land use and resources in terms of sustainability, which require careful consideration. Thus, integrating biofuels into the current world energy mix is a critical step in achieving a more sustainable and resilient energy future.
