Abstract

At present, more than 80% of the world&s;s energy supply is derived from fossil fuels. However, the decreasing availability of these fuels, coupled with increasing carbon dioxide emissions, has drawn global attention toward reducing fossil fuel dependency. This shift has sparked heightened interest in bioenergy, especially biodiesel, which is emerging as a leading renewable energy alternative. Biodiesel has emerged as a crucial renewable energy source, offering a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. The chapter details the production methods of biodiesel, particularly using other alternative methods such as obtaining biodiesel from microbes, chemical trans-esterification, and utilization of petro-diesel mixtures to enhance the machine performance and reduce burden on natural resources. Additionally, we assess the environmental impact of biodiesel through life cycle analyses, highlighting its potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The economic and social dimensions of biodiesel production and use are also addressed, alongside emerging trends and innovations shaping its future. In conclusion, this chapter aims to provide a holistic understanding of biodiesel&s;s role in sustainable development and its significance in the evolving energy landscape.
