Biogas Production
Abstract
Biogas production through anaerobic digestion (AD) represents a promising and sustainable approach to waste management and renewable energy generation. A biological process commonly known as anaerobic digestion turns organic waste into biogas, which helps with waste management and provides a sustainable substitute for fossil fuels. With an emphasis on the engineering and operational facets of anaerobic digester design and analytical techniques related to biogas generation, this chapter provides a thorough introduction of biogas production. The construction, applicability, and operational performance of several reactor configurations including batch, plug-flow reactors (APFRs), CSTRs, UASBRs, biofilm reactors, and hybrid systems are examined. To maximize biogas yield and digester stability, important design factors are examined, including temperature, pH, carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratio, hydraulic retention time (HRT), and organic loading rate (OLR). Along with outlining the techniques used to track gas composition and quality, including gas chromatography, infrared spectroscopy, and electrochemical sensing, the chapter also emphasizes the significance of biogas analysis. The scalability of AD systems for decentralized and industrial-scale operations is illustrated through case studies and real-world applications. All things considered, this chapter provides thorough insights into biogas analysis and anaerobic digester technology, emphasizing its applicability to circular bioeconomy models and sustainable energy transitions.
