Microbial Fuel Cell
Abstract
Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) present a versatile and sustainable technology for converting organic substrates into electrical energy through microbial metabolic processes. This chapter offers a comprehensive exploration of MFC setups and analytical characterization techniques. It begins with a basic introduction to MFC elements, followed by an examination of various MFC types, including single-compartment, two-compartment, and multi-compartment configurations. Detailed descriptions of different setups, such as H-shaped, cuboid-shaped, and up-flow mode systems, and others are provided. Additionally, this chapter delves into essential material characterization methods like SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS, FTIR, and TGA, alongside electrochemical techniques such as EIS, cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, and differential pulse voltammetry. It aims to equip researchers with the necessary knowledge to design, analyze, and optimize MFC systems for enhanced performance and efficiency.
