Pulsed Electric Field-Assisted Extraction
Abstract
A pulsed electric field (PEF) creates a transmembrane potential in the cell membrane, which increases the conductivity and permeability of the membrane. Extra nutritious components found in plants are called bioactive substances. They have anti-cancer, antioxidant, anti-mutagenic, and anti-diabetic qualities. Bioactive components support immunological function, decrease cholesterol, build bone mass, and aid in the treatment of cancer. Because of their application in the pharmaceutical and functional food industries, natural bioactive chemicals are currently in higher demand. For the food and pharmaceutical industries, the most difficult challenge is efficiently and safely extracting bioactive chemicals from plant sources. The shortcomings of the current extraction techniques are addressed by pulsed electric field assistance in extraction. In a shorter amount of time, pulsed electric field extraction yields more bioactive active chemicals. High extraction yields are possible with a low-energy PEF pretreatment. PEF parameters, however, need to be tailored for every microbiological cell depending on its size, shape, and other efficiency-affecting elements. Furthermore, novel uses of PEF for the recovery of chemicals that are confined or organized in structures may be possible as a result of the recent revelation of the activating effect of enzymatic activity during cell incubation following electroporation.
