Abstract

The need to diminish the ecological footprint interlinked with the extraction and analysis of waste has promoted the application of alternative environmental friendly solvents called green solvents. Deep eutectic solvent (DES) has emerged as a green solvent for efficient isolation of bioactive compounds from different raw materials. The low toxicity, biodegradability, and the ability to extract different targeted bioactive compounds makes DES a promising and alternative solvent for extraction. This chapter provides a comprehensive idea of the characteristic properties of DES, highlighting their versatility and efficiency as an extraction solvent for bioactive components. Furthermore, the isolation of phenolic, flavonoid, anthocyanin, and carotenoid compounds using DES as a solvent has been discussed briefly. This chapter also gives an insight into the impact of DES on the properties of the extracted bioactive compounds. Further, it highlights the combination of different extraction processes for recovery of bioactive compounds. Thus, exploring DES as an extraction solvent leads to a more productive and eco-friendly extraction technique in the field of bioactive compound recovery.
