Perspectives and Challenges Shaping the Future of Bioactive Extraction from Food Sources
Abstract
Bioactive extraction from food sources has gained increasing attention in recent years due to its potential to provide novel and sustainable sources of nutraceuticals and pharmaceuticals. However, developing efficient and sustainable extraction methods that can be scaled up for industrial applications remains a significant challenge. This chapter provides an overview of the perspectives and challenges shaping the future of bioactive extraction from food sources. It discusses the current state-of-the-art extraction technologies, including conventional methods such as solvent extraction, maceration, and distillation, as well as emerging technologies such as supercritical fluid extraction, microwave-assisted extraction, and enzyme-assisted extraction. The chapter also highlights the challenges associated with using food sources for bioactive extraction, including the variability of bioactive compounds in different cultivars, the impact of processing on bioactive compound content, and the need for sustainable and environmentally friendly extraction methods. Finally, the chapter discusses the potential applications of bioactive compounds extracted from food sources in various industries, including food and beverage, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. The chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the current state of bioactive extraction from food sources and highlights the challenges and opportunities in this rapidly developing field.
