Abstract

Insects are gaining recognition as a sustainable and nutrient-rich food source with the potential to address global nutritional and health challenges. This chapter examines the nutritional and health benefits associated with edible insects, emphasizing their rich content of essential macro- (proteins, fats, and carbohydrates) and micro-nutrients (vitamins and minerals). Additionally, insects contain bioactive compounds, including antioxidants and antimicrobial agents, which can contribute to human health by enhancing nutrition and potentially reducing the risk of chronic diseases. As the global population continues to rise and environmental sustainability becomes increasingly crucial, edible insect biomass production offers a promising alternative to conventional animal protein sources. In addition, it also explores the future prospects of integrating insects into mainstream diets and their potential role in improving global food security and public health outcomes.
