Abstract

The increasing complexity of toxicological analysis and the volume of data generated by modern instrumentation have led to the adoption of advanced technological solutions in forensic science. Expert systems and artificial intelligence (AI) have emerged as transformative tools in forensic analytical toxicology, particularly in the interpretation of analytical data, prediction of toxic effects, and automation of decision-making processes. These technologies are particularly valuable in assisting with the interpretation of toxicological screening results, such as GC-MS analysis, which can automatically match peaks to known substances, flag unusual results, and suggest possible interactions or causes of intoxication. Expert systems provide consistency and repeatability in toxicological interpretation, enhancing the objectivity and reproducibility of toxicological findings, which are crucial in forensic settings, especially in the context of the judiciary.
