Abstract

This chapter discusses the classification of poisons, focusing on various criteria, including their source/origin, physical state, mode of action, and chemical properties/method of isolation. Further, pesticides are classified, highlighting the main classes such as organochlorines, organophosphates, carbamates, and pyrethroids. Poisons are further categorized based on legal implications, distinguishing between homicidal, suicidal, accidental, and other types of poisoning. Finally, Clark's classification and the World Health Organization (WHO) classification of poisons are introduced, offering a framework to assess the toxicity and risk level of substances, ranging from extremely hazardous to low hazard. These classification systems aid in improving safety measures, guiding medical management, and enhancing the understanding of risks posed by toxic substances.
