Abstract

This chapter discusses how large language models (LLMs) can be employed in cultural heritage practice. Their recent introduction has sparked great interest in the community, in particular, regarding their application to cultural artifact analysis and curation. They also serve as a natural interaction interface between human users and digitalized repositories of cultural assets. This chapter presents an overview of the working principles behind LLMs and several case studies related to using LLMs to digitize ancient texts, create interactive museum exhibits, and support collaborative research. It also discusses challenges and future directions for using LLMs in cultural heritage projects, showing how this AI subfield can help users understand and engage with history and culture.
