Emerging technologies and their uses in the agriculture sector
Abstract
Agriculture, being the main pillar of civilization, faces challenges in meeting the increasing demands of the global population for the use of sustainable resources. The traditional methods of farming are not able to address the contemporary problems like climate change, rural poverty, and depletion of resources anymore. This chapter discusses the emerging technologies that would transform the agricultural sector by improving productivity and ensuring sustainability. Three of the main key innovations are to be examined for their possible power to deal with the currently faced agricultural issues, such as precision agriculture, artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and blockchain. With the use of such advanced tools as drones, sensors, and data analytics, farmers have a better way to achieve optimal crop production and resource conservation, while adapting to the changing environment. Additionally, the chapter presents the case examples of the AUGEIAS project, demonstrating how intelligent systems can increase resource utilization by reusing the treated wastewater in precision agriculture. The importance of this is in thinking about agriculture as an integrated approach through technological innovations, sustainable practices, and engagement of the community in facilitating resilience in agriculture. The use of these advancements may well be the way forward to an equitable, sustainable, and food-secured agricultural future. This work adds to the understanding of how these technologies can transform the agricultural landscape and help in global food security by discussing challenges and opportunities, as well as trends in the near future. This forms a guide for academia, industry stakeholders, and policymakers in adopting new technologies in the agriculture sector for a sustainable future.
