Abstract

The growing demands of human development, innovative technologies, and population expansion across the world are the causes of drastic changes and limitations in ecosystem services (ESs). Forests are basic to the global ecosystem offering essential ESs like climate regulation, water reservoir, and protecting biodiversity, but most of these services are in a degraded condition. This paper will analyse how forests play a significant role in protecting biodiversity and maintaining ecological processes, and understand the major causes that lead to their degradation and disappearance of habitats.Agricultural expansion, mining of the soil industrially, urbanisation and industrialization are some of the main factors contributing to forest decline because they cause irreversible alterations in the land surface and habitat fragmentation. Moreover, the climate change, coupled with environmental disruptions, increases the susceptibility of forest ecosystems. The subsequent loss of habitats and degradation of forests has a negative effect on biodiversity protection and ecosystem operations, which results in a risk of species extinction and natural processes breakage. The mitigation of these impacts and sustainability of global forest ecosystems in the long term requires effective sustainable forest and habitat management, which combines the protection of biodiversity and deals with trade-offs between resource production.
