Abstract

The search for common patterns among medical mentalities in different socio-cultural and temporal contexts is a way of linking medicine to human behaviour. Although the history of medicine has been classically based on written sources such as manuscripts, treatises and medical books, professional press, letters, or clinical records, it is now recognized that it is important to consider other sources and itineraries, themes, characters, spaces, and to consider health in an integrative way including ideas, beliefs, practices, values or terminology (Fresquet Febrer and Aguirre Marco 2016, Ferragud and Bertomeu 2023). Thus, from our point of view, the history of medicine can establish fruitful relationships with ethnomedicine, ethnopharmacology and other social and cultural disciplines from transdisciplinary approaches ( Prinz 1991 , Conner 2009 , Perdiguero and Comelles 2020 , Quinlan 2022 , Perdiguero and Comelles 2023 , Jarrar et al. 2024 ).
