Abstract

Cognitive computing is an emerging field that leverages artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to mimic human cognitive abilities, like learning, problem-solving, and decision-making. Advanced AI systems, such as, large language models (LLMs) have revolutionized natural language processing (NLP) and have been increasingly integrated into cognitive computing frameworks to enhance their capabilities. This study aims to understand the role of LLMs in cognitive computing through a detailed analysis and case study evaluation. This chapter introduces cognitive computing, covering its components, history, and core functionalities. It then presents an overview of LLMs, exploring their development, key technologies, and applications. The chapter concludes with an examination of how LLMs enhance cognitive systems by improving data processing, contextual understanding, and interactive learning through the intersection of LLMs and cognitive computing. The case study demonstrates practical applications of cognitive computing and LLMs for rehabilitation of chemo brain patients. Finally, we discuss the current limitations and suggest future research directions to address these challenges and further integration of LLMs into cognitive computing systems.
