Abstract

The chapter on cognitive-based smart computing delves into the transformative impact of cognitive computing technologies, including machine learning (ML), natural language processing (NLP), and advanced analytics, in revolutionizing healthcare delivery. It highlights the application of cognitive computing in healthcare, focusing on clinical decision support systems (CDSS) powered by cognitive systems such as, IBM Watson and the University of California’s, San Francisco’s (UCSF’s) CareWeb. These systems leverage NLP algorithms to extract and analyze patient data, leading to improved treatment decisions, reduced errors, and enhanced patient outcomes. Moreover, the chapter emphasizes the function of cognitive computing in lowering clinical mistakes via artificial intelligence (AI) and ML technologies, which proactively pick out mistakes and offer selection assistance to healthcare professionals. Additionally, it discusses the ethical considerations surrounding cognitive-based smart computing, emphasizing the importance of transparency, fairness, and data privacy. However, the implementation of cognitive computing in healthcare also presents significant challenges. Data privacy concerns must be addressed to protect sensitive patient information from breaches and misuse. Furthermore, algorithm bias poses a risk, as biased data can lead to inequitable or prejudiced treatment recommendations and outcomes. Addressing these challenges is crucial to harnessing the full potential of cognitive computing in healthcare, ensuring it benefits all patients equitably and safely. The chapter concludes by underlining the potential of cognitive computing to optimize resource allocation, enhance patient care, and reduce healthcare costs.
