Abstract

This chapter covers component playtests as a hybrid method between usability and experience playtests for evaluating how core game systems and supporting elements (e.g. audio, narrative, art) support each other in building the intended experience before fully integrating them within the game. Component playtests focus on whether key systems are experienced as intended and how individual assets either support or hinder that experience. This chapter outlines a step-by-step process for planning and conducting component playtests, shares practical tips, and common pitfalls with the method.
