Understanding What's on the Menu
Abstract
This chapter covers an overview of ten user research methods tailored for indie or small game studios operating under various constraints. Rather than idealized examples, it offers context-driven, flexible approaches that acknowledge limited budgets, time, and logistics. Each method, ranging from competitor analysis, through usability playtests, to diary studies and review analysis, addresses key gameplay experience questions such as appeal, comprehension, engagement, and retention. The chapter emphasizes choosing methods that balance cost with effect and advocates for triangulation (i.e. combining multiple approaches to build a fuller understanding of player experiences). It also stresses adaptability, encouraging readers to use methods outside their “typical” production phases when necessary. The goal is not one perfect dish, but a well-balanced diet for the healthy game development process.
